The original historical landscape of Prussia, named after its Baltic natives, the Prussians, roughly corresponded to what later became East Prussia.
After the Teutonic Order had subjugated Prussia, which was not subject to any secular feudal lord due to the papal bull of Rieti, Prussia together with Pomerania formed the center of the Teutonic Order state.
Its territory was divided in 1466 in the Second Peace of Thorn into that which was directly subordinate to the Polish crown Royal Prussia, which included Pomerania, and the Restordenstaat,
which had to recognize Polish feudal sovereignty.
Through its secularization, the secular Duchy of Prussia was created in 1525, which fell to the Electors of Brandenburg in 1618 by inheritance. They now ruled both countries in personal union.
